About Fishkill
The Town of Fishkill at the southwest tip of Dutchess County is an area rich in History set with in a beautiful landscape between the mountains and the majestic Hudson River. The name "Fishkill" is derived from the Dutch words "vis" (fish) and "kill" (creek or stream). In 1683 the land that became Fishkill was purchased by Frances Rombout and Gulian Verplanck who planned to use the property for fur trading. Around 1709 Rombout´s daughter, Catharyna and her husband, Roger Brett came and settled in the area and built a mill by the Fishkill Creek, which still stands today as one of the oldest continuous residences in Dutchess County. In the Revolutionary War, a military encampment in Fishkill provided the location to guard the mountain pass to the south and later became the main supply depot for the Continental Army´s northern division.
